Dr. John Latartara is Associate Professor of music theory and the theory area head. He received his doctorate in theoretical studies from the New England Conservatory of Music. His research interests include performance analysis using spectrographic technology and he has published on a wide variety of Western and non-Western music including Hildegard von Bingen, Guillaume de Machaut, Beethoven, Chopin, twentieth-century computer music, the Chinese qin, and Japanese gagaku music.
Dr. Latartara’s research has appeared in numerous journals including Indiana Theory Review, Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Current Musicology, Journal of Musicological Research, and Ethnomusicology, and he has lectured throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, Puerto Rico, and Thailand. He was granted a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar award to Thailand for 2008-2009 where he studied and lectured on traditional Thai music.
